I first heard of Reiki many years ago when several ER and OR nurses I knew told me about it. Simply put, Reiki is a form of Energy Healing involving symbols, energy, and concentration. Reiki practitioners can perform their healing work for clients in person or over vast distances.
We owe the discovery of the Reiki system to a man named Mikao Usui. He developed the Reiki system in 1922. People who become attuned to Reiki generally receive a certificate showing the lineage of the person who attuned them – linking directly back to Usui himself. As a Reiki Master, I have such a certificate showing my own links to the origin of Reiki. Anyone I attune will receive a similar certificate. Once considered “fringe,” in the past decade Reiki has found a solid place in many hospitals around the world. As happened in my case, Reiki often comes to the attention of people through nurses.
Reiki energy flowing through us can do remarkable things! Once when I was listening to a most fascinating podcast, my MP3 player stopped cold. The battery needed charging. I didn’t relish the idea of waiting several hours for the rest of the podcast – so I had an idea: I’d use Reiki energy on the player!
I held the player in one hand, carefully “drew” the Reiki symbol above the player with my other hand, then concentrated on sending the energy into the battery. The result was immediate! While I didn’t fully charge the battery, the Reiki energy flow gave the battery enough additional energy to get me to the end of the podcast. That experiment provided concrete evidence of the power of Reiki! Nobody could dare dismiss this as “psychosomatic” or, more sneeringly, “placebo.” For a look at the power of placebo, BTW, check out my page on HEALING POWER.
Learning the history of Reiki plays a part in understanding the Reiki traditions. This history shows, among many other things, exactly why Usui made payment for Reiki treatment mandatory. When he discovered the Reiki System, Usui set out by treating people free of charge. What he discovered, however, hit him as a complete surprise…
Getting attuned to Reiki is perhaps the easiest part of the whole system. What comes after that takes work. As is the case with all arts and sciences, you will find a wide range of schools and individuals which will teach you and the prices for these services, naturally, vary. Check out as many as you can – but please use common sense in deciding which way to go. I have had people boast to me about their having paid over $10,000 to receive “secret” Reiki Attunement rites. If that strikes you as excessive – to say the least! – then you have a functioning common sense meter. Nothing about Reiki will involve such secrecy or cost.
In my opinion, one of the best places for getting Attuned to Reiki, becoming a Reiki Master, and for learning the art through great follow-up support, is Chikara-Reiki-Do. The good people who launched this service sparked quite a controversy back when they began. The issue was their 21st Century method of Attuning Reiki Masters via video link over the internet. “In order to be genuinely Attuned,” came the replies, “one MUST be face to face with the Master who does the Attuning.” This led to one simple question in response: Who, then, attuned Mikao Usui?
I have found Chikara-Reiki-Do reasonably priced, very supportive, and the people provide all manner of training on-line so that you can Attune others in person if you wish. They have a continuing BLOG and provide many informative video chats such as this one:
